Who is Local Grown Harvest?
As mentioned above, Local Grown Harvest is a local, family farmer’s market located in Milan, MI.  The farm is ran by Bob and Kirsten Heath and their family, who truly believe in the significance of optimal nutrition and health. Their mission is to grow fresh, chemical free, non-GMO produce, pastured chicken and farm-fresh eggs in order to provide optimal nutrition to their community. Local Grown Harvest does not use any variety of pesticide or herbicide on their produce and they raise pastured chickens that are able to move around and forage outdoors naturally to offer farm-fresh eggs and delicious, nutrient-rich meat. While working diligently to expand, they currently service Milan, Saline, and Ann Arbor.
Furthermore, Bob and Kirsten are incredibly knowledgeable about the importance of farming without chemicals and the benefits of nutrient dense food. Unfortunately, it is not common knowledge these days to research and know exactly what we are putting in our bodies. However, people like us and like Bob & Kirsten want that to come to an end. Pesticides, herbicides, GMO, etc. not only put stress on our bodies, and cause an array of illnesses, but will certainly feed various diseases and even cancers. Providing our bodies with nutrient-rich, healthy food can prevent those maladies and disorders before they initiate or even better, combat an existing disease.

Check out these informational sections of their website to learn more on why local, better-than-organic, chemical-free food is so important--
  • Locally Grown Food
  • Better Than Organic

Local Grown Harvest invites their customers and curious community members to take a tour of the farm so they can get to know them and see exactly how they operate the farm and green house. You can touch, smell, and taste their heirloom veggies and learn how they are sustainably grown all year long. This is an amazing advantage of buying local! When you know and trust your farmer, it is reassuring to know that they are growing it right, with the highest possible nutritional value and their growing it for you and your family.

What Do They Offer?
Local Grown Harvest is quite a unique farmer’s market for many reasons, like their online ordering option, but they are also able to provide produce all year round! Even in the middle of our frigid Michigan winters, you will be able to place orders for fresh produce thanks to their remarkable Aquaponics system. Essentially, their aquaponics method uses organic fish waste, made by organically fed koi fish, to fertilize plants and the water they swim in to hydrate them. This maintainable system results in plentiful amounts of fresh, nutritious plants and produce. Check out their greenhouse tour video and learn more about aquaponics HERE.

Some of the delicious selections they offer:
(BONUS: click on each underlined food item below to read up on their benefits)
  • Currently Available Now:
  • Kale
    • This nutrient rich favorite is known to support the body’s detoxification process and it is an excellent source of vitamin K.
  • Swiss Chard
    • This colorful cruciferous leaf is packed with essential phytonutrients, it has natural anti-inflammatory properties and is known to regulate blood sugar.
  • Mixed Lettuce (sweet Bibb and Arianna contrasted by crunchy Romaine)
    • Often overlooked when it comes to health benefits, romaine lettuce is a superb source of dietary fiber. It contains minerals like manganese, potassium, copper, and iron; plus vitamins like biotin, vitamin B1, and vitamin C.
  • Pastured Chicken
    • The hens of Local Grown Harvest are all raised on pasture in mobile chicken housing called tractors. This allows them plenty of space to move around outside, but are also protected from predators and the harsh elements of the weather.
  • Farm-Fresh Eggs (available all year!)
    • Of course known for their high protein content, but they also contain all the B vitamins, and are Omega-3 rich. They are healthy, happy chickens that produce eggs loaded with beneficial nutrients and surely lacking in harmful chemicals, opposed to store-bought eggs.
  • Herbs and spices like dried oregano, garlic powder, fresh oregano, and rosemary.

Can’t decide?  Give the “First-Timer’s Bag” a try. It will include a variety of produce that is available for the week. This is a great starting point for your first order.
Bob and Kirsten also include recipes and a newsletter with each order. They like to include updates on the farm, health tips, events, etc. The recipes are easy to follow, quick and delicious.

Other heirloom vegetables & fruits available at different times of the year:
Beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, herbs (dill, Genovese Basil, Italian Parsley, sage, thyme, peppermint and borage), kale, melons (cantaloupe, golden midget, honeydew and watermelon) onions, parsnips, sugar snap and snow peas, peppers (green, red, yellow, orange and jalapeño), potatoes (these are not heirloom, as they are not available in heirloom varieties anywhere), radishes, rutabaga, spinach, summer & winter squash, sweet potatoes, tomatillo, tomatoes, turnips, ground cherries, mustard greens and eggplant.

“We aim to improve the life of our soil, our ecosystem, our customers, our community, and ourselves. A huge aspect of those efforts is raising real, natural, alive food. Therefore, you won’t find a single GMO plant on our farm! Further, we use no chemicals on any of our foods, ever! This is why we can say with confidence that we are better than organic!”
